Closed Head Injuries

Closed head injuries, or closed brain injuries, are injuries to the brain that do not involve a broken skull or any other penetration of the brain. This does not imply that they are not serious. In fact, closed head injuries can be complicated by cerebral compression when swelling or bleeding places pressure on the brain tissues. Sometimes, the treatment for this cerebral compression includes opening the skull to alleviate the pressure, a craniectomy.

Closed head injuries can happen in a variety of ways, and they fall into two categories, traumatic and non-traumatic. Concussions are a form of mild traumatic brain injury. Concussions occur from a blow to the head, whiplash or essentially any incident that can cause the brain to move inside the skull and injure the delicate brain tissue. Even though most people sustain only temporary neurological effects, experiencing a concussion predisposes a person to neurological complications later in life.

Non-traumatic brain injuries are also closed head injuries. For instance, brain injury from toxic chemical exposure affects the brain indirectly through the bloodstream. Even though there may not be any visible evidence of injury, the effects are as incapacitating as any traumatically induced brain injury. Brain injury from hypoxia and anoxia are also closed head injuries. When the brain gets too little oxygen (hypoxia), or no oxygen (anoxia), brain cells begin to die. This can occur in instances of near-drowning, carbon monoxide poisoning or other asphyxiation.

Brain injury affects the whole family. Brain damage has lasting effects including amnesia, loss of voluntary muscle control, inability to perform tasks of daily living, such as tying shoes, loss of language and various degrees of cognitive difficulties.

Brain injury is a serious medical condition that affects the whole family. Very often, the incident that caused the injury could have been prevented. If you are dealing with the debilitating aftermath of a brain injury, your own or your loved one's, incurred because of another person's actions, you need a skilled Phoenix brain injury attorney with experience in these types of cases to help you recover the greatest possible monetary damages for your injuries.
